Experience Southwest Washington: PNW Fitness, Outdoors, and Gyms

Whether you’re looking for a gym nearby to supercharge your fitness and health or prefer outdoor adventures and activities, Southwest Washington is an ideal region for fitness enthusiasts.

As a visitor, or even as a Pacific Northwest native, it can be challenging to decide on the perfect active adventure. Sandy beaches, towering mountains, evergreen forests; we’re lucky to have options that are truly endless!

From a thrilling outdoor workout (no equipment required) to the best exercise gym, we’ve curated a list of ideas so you can get fit and get outside during your time in the Southwest WA.

Get Active: PNW Outdoor Adventures

Arguably one of the most active regions of the United States, the PNW has an abundance of outdoor adventures just waiting to be explored. Here are several ways to boost your fitness and health in the lower left corner of Washington State:

1. Hiking, Biking, and Climbing

Hiking, biking, and climbing are perhaps the most iconic forms of PNW fitness due to the wealth of trails, forests, and mountain ranges. These locations are ideal if you love getting in your cardio while exploring nature.

One of SW Washington’s most popular forest destinations for hiking and biking is the Camas area. With 16 breathtaking trails, you’ll make lots of selfie stops along the way.

When Mount St. Helens erupted forty years ago, PNW natives never imagined the beauty it would leave behind. Whether you head out there in summer or winter, there are plenty of activities to get your sweat on. The picturesque views are well worth the visit – and will make your workout fly by!

2. Beach Fitness

The Pacific Ocean is the perfect backdrop for a beach workout.

If you’re visiting Southwest Washington, head to the serene stretch of sand at Fort Stevens State Park. PNW fitness enthusiasts love the wide, flat beach as it has plenty of room for an outdoor workout; no equipment required! Go for a power walk, pace yourself with a jog, or turn things up with a heart-pumping run along the sand. If you're up for a camping adventure, be sure to pack accordingly as Fort Stevens is also one of the largest campgrounds in the U.S.!

Further west, National Graphic named the Oregon Coast one of the world’s most beautiful places, so you’ll want to make time for a hike to Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach.

3. Watersports

If water workouts are more your style, then Southwest WA is sure to please with a plethora of rivers and rapids flowing through multiple states. This type of PNW fitness gives you the best of everything: thrills, views, and arm/core-pumping exercise.

Three of the best outdoor fitness studios, aka rafting rivers in the PNW, are Oregon’s Rogue River and Washington’s White Salmon River & Washougal River. A journey down any one of these will be a workout you’ll never forget.

Looking for a slightly more passive workout? Turn down the intensity and trade your raft for a kayak or paddleboard trip at Vancouver Lake Regional Park or along the Columbia River in Portland.

Southwest Washington offers endless places to jog outside, from neighborhood routes to rocky trail runs.

4. Running

Whether you’re running for pleasure or running for weight loss, you will love running throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Running clubs are very popular in this region, and you’ll find a number of clubs associated with Road Runners and USA Track & Field (USATF).

There are many benefits to group fitness, and running clubs are no exception. Club runners love hitting the streets to take in the scenery, stay active, and surround themselves with like-minded people working toward similar goals.

Southwest Washington: The Perfect Location for Fitness

One of the Pacific Northwest’s greatest draws is its natural beauty. But it's not only about the great outdoors.

Many of us who call Southwest WA home love fitness of all kinds.

Searching for a "boutique gym near me" will bring up fitness gyms across our little corner of the PNW.

Gyms & Studios

While there are plenty of outdoor options, the PNW’s weather can be unpredictable. Just because the elements are in full force, doesn’t mean you can’t get in an intentional workout. Find a fitness studio or exercise gym nearby that’ll provide an equally heart-warming and heart-pumping workout.

1. Boutique Gyms

There are many boutique gyms in the Pacific Northwest. A quick Google search for a “boutique gym near me” may yield several results. However, finding a gym, and finding the right gym, can be quite different. Ask around or stop by to learn more about the culture and style of instruction before choosing the best option for you.

2. Fitness and Health Clubs

You’ll also find larger PNW fitness and health clubs and franchises that offer indoor amenities along with a variety of workout equipment. Head in for a quick workout or indoor run in one of the big box gyms.

Looking for a gym with passionate fitness coaches, top-notch personalized workouts, and an inviting community? We know just the place!
